Which abec is faster

The "Cage" is the thing that holds the balls in between the bearing races. It acts to keep the bearings evenly spaced and therefore holds the whole bearing together. Most branded skate bearings have nylon cages, whilst cheaper bearings will have steel cages.

Nylon cages are usually used in high speed bearing applications, but for skateboard bearings its a less clear cut advantage. Nylon cages may have some slight advantages over steel cages in that it could possibly help to dampen the shock loads associated with skating, and it may assist in holding the lubricant in.

Honestly though, we'd be suprised if you can tell the difference! One big advantage of a nylon cage over a steel cage is that nylon cages are easy to remove - so you can completely strip the bearing for a full clean.

Steel cages are basically impossible to remove, so you wont be able to dissaemble the bearing and you'll be stuck with a half-arsed cleaning job. Decks Expand menu Collapse menu. We have to believe that they are until it is proven otherwise. What is the meaning of "Z" and "ZZ" in the bearing code?

EG "ZZ" "Z" is a designation which means a steel shield covering the side of the bearing for most brands. We support other names who have also been dedicated to delivering quality products for years. Instead they opted for "Skate Rated" as they designed their bearings specifically for skate applications. Zealous is also a brand well known by skaters and for good reason.

Their humble bearings were among the first affordable bearings with built-in spacers. We also like Oust for their premium materials and attention to engineering. Of course, we also dig our esteemed Dragon Bearings for their various lubricant choices and labyrinth seals. This is why we also recommend checking out what fellow skaters say through product reviews. Whether you do this by combing the comment section or going to the skatepark and polling the locals, you can take comfort in the unapologetic and honest nature of fellow skaters.

Bearing seals and shields are designed to protect the bearing from outside debris, while helping to keep lubricants inside the bearing. There are a lot of types out there, but we will focus on the two main ones. Metal - The most durable, but the hardest to clean and provides the worst seal from debris. These are often not removable.

Rubber - Rubber is easily removed, but more easily damaged. There are two kinds: regular and labyrinth. Regular seals seal slightly better than metal. Labyrinth seals sit in a groove in the metal race and create additional distance for the dirt to travel. These are the best seals for skateboard bearings and found on Dragon Bearings. Two races or rings makeup a bearing and they are call the inner and outer race.

I think it definitely matters. I used the Chinese Reds for my quad skates for roller dancing and they were perfect. Once I upgraded to Super Reds I had lots of problems. The Super Reds are wayyyy faster and it was a lot harder for me to do moves in a little space.

Sometimes more expensive is not better. Super Reds are better bearings though. Thanks, David, for the comment and for stopping by. I will have to disagree with you on the ABEC rating itself. As I mention in the article, ABEC is all about the tolerance of the bearing, which has very little use in a roller skating application.

However, I do agree with you that there is a bit of a preference depending on your style and what you are after. That is always true in everything you buy. I feel like it is the best overall bearing for what I do freestyle, session skating and a little bit of speed skating.

You should always buy what makes you feel right on your skates. Thanks again for taking the time to come by and drop a comment. I always love a good discussion! Hi John — Thanks for stopping by. Hello, looking for inline skates for my 9yr old grandson. I too was getting caught up in the bearing thing…since I know nothing about skating. Seems fishy and maybe I should be aware! Then I noticed the brand Rollerblade seems only one that has website.. Great, load more confusion.

I think I need to focus more on a reputable middle range brand rather then bearings…. GREAT even that is confusing nowadays! Thanks for settling my one issue…wanna settle both?
