Jeremiah continually denounced Jehoiakim for his selfishness, materialism, and injustice. However, his special predictions of desolation were always for Judah. When Jehoiakim withheld tribute from the Babylonians, Jeremiah warned that Judah would be destroyed by Babylon. Many died in a siege of Jerusalem and more were carried off to Babylon in The Babylonians placed Zedekiah on the throne of Judah. During this time, Jeremiah wrote to the exiles in Babylon, telling them they would not be returning to their homeland anytime soon.
Instead, he passed along a message from the Lord telling them to settle in Babylon. This was a captivity for the long haul. Jeremiah was known for his dramatic object lessons. For example, when emissaries from surrounding nations came to Judah asking the nation to join a rebellion against Babylon, Jeremiah put a yoke on his neck and went about urging the nations to submit to the yoke of Babylon and live Jeremiah At the height of the Babylonian siege, on orders from God, Jeremiah bought land in the city of Jerusalem to show that the Jews would one day return Jeremiah Jeremiah preached a lot of doom and punishment.
However, his message was ultimately one of repentance and restoration. God was quick to remind his people that although there would be consequences for their sin, He still had a plan. Jeremiah lived at a truly terrible time in history. Not only did he experience the horrors of war, starvation, siege, and captivity, he was called upon to tell the people of it, urging them to repent.
So I will reach out and destroy you; I am tired of holding back I will bring bereavement and destruction on my people, for they have not changed their ways. I will make their widows more numerous than the sand of the sea Jeremiah , Many times, he cries out to God, even lashing out, as in Jeremiah Jeremiah witnessed, both in foresight and real time, the destruction of his people.
The book of Jeremiah offers many valuable lessons. Judah was sent into captivity, the Promised Land stripped from them, and it was entirely their own fault. They were warned, over and over and over, but they did not repent. God did not deal with them with any unusual harshness; in fact, the fact that he gave the wicked people such a long time to repent shows His love. He sent dozens of messengers proclaiming repentance, but these messengers were killed, abused, and mocked.
God gave opportunity after opportunity for repentance. Our God is a God of forgiveness. But when we refuse this forgiveness, a just God can only allow wickedness to continue for so long. What happens when we mess up badly, like Judah, and end up in a terrible situation that is entirely of our own causing? Written in poetry and prose, the Book of Jeremiah is divided into a Prologue, the Calling and Mission of Jeremiah Chapter 1 ; Oracles in the Days of Josiah Chapters ; the Temple Sermon 7 ; Oracles during the reign of Jehoiakim ; Oracles during the last years of Jerusalem ; the Fall of Jerusalem ; Judgement on the Nations ; and an Epilogue, which describes the Fall of Jerusalem , also recounted in Second Kings Jeremiah is probably most noted for his prophecy on the 70 years of the Babylonian Captivity of the Jewish people Jeremiah , The prophet Daniel recalls Jeremiah's prophecy on "the desolation of Jerusalem for seventy years.
Life begins at conception. Jeremiah notes "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. In his Letter to the Exiles in Babylon, Jeremiah provides a source for encouragement and hope: "For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.
Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. When you look for me, you will find me. Chapter 36 has Jeremiah dictating to his scribe Baruch who recorded the words on a scroll to have it read in the Temple of the Lord. Chapters record the Sufferings of Jeremiah.
However, the Letter of Jeremiah was discovered in the Dead Sea Scrolls written in Hebrew and has received renewed attention. And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned. In the ways hast thou sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and thou hast polluted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.
Behold, thou hast spoken and done evil things as thou couldest. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
Woe unto us! Israel would be restored, the nations that crushed her would be crushed, and the old covenants with Israel, David and the Levites would be honored. God would make a new covenant with his people in which he would write his law on their hearts see and notes; see also Heb and note and thus consecrate them to his service. The new covenant was cast in the form of ancient Near Eastern royal grant treaties and contained unconditional, gracious and profoundly spiritual, moral, ethical and relational promises.
The house of David would rule God's people in righteousness, and faithful priests would serve. God's commitment to Israel's redemption was as unfailing as the secure order of creation ch. Jeremiah's message illumined the distant as well as the near horizon. It was false prophets who proclaimed peace to a rebellious nation, as though the God of Israel's peace was indifferent to her unfaithfulness.
But the very God who compelled Jeremiah to denounce sin and pronounce judgment was the God who authorized him to announce that the divine wrath had its bounds, its 70 years.
Afterward forgiveness and cleansing would come -- and a new day, in which all the old expectations, aroused by God's past acts and his promises and covenants, would yet be fulfilled in a manner transcending all God's mercies of old.
