There are some bearings that can handle wet conditions but they are crazy expensive. Furthermore, rain affects your grip tape and can cause a deck to become waterlogged.
The wood absorbs the water which affects the flex of your deck. It also can cause delamination, meaning the wooden layers that are glued together come off. A skateboarder will have a hard time keeping up with a longboarder.
It requires much more effort to get up to speed and maintain velocity on a skateboard. Skateboards accelerate faster but require a lot of pushing to keep rolling. The trucks will start to have a mind of its own resulting in speed wobble. Once you get up to speed a longboard just keeps going with minimum effort at least compared to a skateboard.
Longboard can go really fast, the wide tricks, large soft wheels and deck will keep your ride stable without having to worry about being thrown off. Want speed? Go for a longboard. Think about the style you like most. Love how people dance on a longboard, make sure to get a dancer. Want to bomb the hills, get a longboard that can handle it. Just want to cruise and carve, get a basic longboard and go from there. You could also consider getting a cruiser, I wrote a post a while ago about skateboards, longboards, and cruisers which explains the differences.
Go for a skateboard when you want to do tricks. If you want a bit of both consider building a skateboard that allows you to cruise and still do some basic tricks.
Wheels between 80A and 92A with a size of at least 56mm is a good start, consider riser pads when you go above 56mm or skate with very loose trucks. Cruisers like the Landyachtz Dinghy allow you to do tricks and cruise comfortable around town.
They are great for hopping curbs, old school tricks, carve and easy to carry around. I recently tested this board and it was such a fun ride. Check out the review. Or check my complete list of best cruisers all tested.
This should give you a good idea to do some further research about the type of skateboard or longboard is the best for your personal preferences.

I'm an aged skateboarder, but I still shred responsibly. I started skateboarding 25 years ago and I'm out there whenever I can. It's been a while since I reviewed a skateboard, this time I tested the Landyacht ATV and I know many of you are curious about this board.
To be honest, I wasn't that impressed mainly because it's After testing many bearings over a year in different circumstances and weather types, we came to the conclusion that the best skateboard bearings are not the most expensive bearings. You'll be Skip to content As you probably know the choice between a longboard or skateboard depends on what you want to do.
Table of Contents. Lastly, you might have the perfect skateboard but your environment could be what is letting you down.
It is quite easy to deal with rougher roads all you need to do is buy bigger wheels — bigger wheels help smooth out the ride and make it a lot more comfortable and easier to ride rough roads. They also make it possible to roll over pebbles and can even strong-arm small rocks out of your way.
The most ideal location for going fast would be somewhere that is both smooth AND steep. A steep and smooth highway is the perfect combination to go 60mph! Check out Thiago Lessa easily hitting that speed in the Instagram clip below.
But is that really all it takes to go really fast, or is there more? Like with all things speed-related, aerodynamics does play a part. Aerodynamics will make a big difference when it comes to how fast you can go on your board. Fortunately, longboarders already have a good way of dealing with it. Do you see that goofy thing longboarders do when they bend over? Well, that simply reduces their surface area in a really efficient way and helps them cut through the air easier.
Check out what I mean in the picture below. They simply get their chest as close down to their knee as possible and try close off any air pockets. When done right, they can typically increase their speed from 30mph to 50mph on a given hill. To be fair, this position will be quite difficult and awkward for most skaters to do on a traditional skateboard. But simply bending at the hip or crouching down will reduce your surface area and will allow you to go much faster. But in general, well-maintained bearings will always be faster than unmaintained ones.
And in that same train of thought, fresh bearings will always roll better, smoother, take you up to higher speeds, than old bearings. And instead of trying to maintain and clean your already very tired set of bearings, simply get a fresh set and go from there — much less stressful IMO.
Check out my review of the Loaded Jehu-bearings. Pretty reliable bearings if you are looking to skate fast consistently — they are what I use. As we all know, a straight line down the hill or through a corner is the fastest.
Drop through and drop deck boards are often bigger and heavier. They provide more comfortable and secure foot placement for going fast. They also allow for bigger wheels faster. The most famous example of downhill longboard is probably the Landyachtz Evo Amazon , which has won many contests, or the Switchblade on Amazon , another good stable option. On the other hand, big and heavy longboards are also harder to turn , including for sliding.
More advanced speed longboarders sometimes prefer smaller boards with topmount decks trucks mounted under the deck , which are higher off the ground and thus less stable but more responsive to turns. Wheel choice is also important for going fast : bigger wheels 75 to 85mm go faster, and sharper wheels have better grip at speed.
But big wheels also cause wheel bite on many topmounts, unless the deck is elevated — which makes it even more unstable and best suited for more advanced riders.
A very common problem you may encounter with going fast on your longboard is wobbling — your longboard starts to swirl back and forth like crazy without you apparently doing anything. Wobbles typically start when you reach a certain speed as you overcorrect your course following slight turning caused by bumps or cracks.
As a result, you correct your deck lean too much, leading to a larger turn in the opposite direction — and so on. To fix the problem, you may be tempted to tighten your trucks to make them harder to turn, and reduce your truck angles to make the board less turning for a given amount of deck lean. However, these measures may just postpone the problem, which can kick back in at higher speeds. In reality, the wobbling caused by your constant overcorrections results from not controlling your front truck when riding fast, since the front truck is what initiates turning.
Less experienced longboarders tend to lean too far back in their tuck, with their weight too much over the rear truck when at high speed, making for lower control over the front truck.
Leaning forward, lowering your center of gravity, and pushing your weight closer to the front truck will greatly reduce wobbling. In conclusion, you can go fast, or even very fast on your longboard.
You can just cruise or carve around at speeds around mph, or you can take to the hills with the big boys and hit speeds in the 50s or much higher. Is Longboarding Hard? A Common Beginner Question. They are perfect for cross-country and downhill. Skateboarders need to use their feet on the ground to get the thrust and speed. This creates the thrust and force without your feet having to leave the board. This allows longboard riders to cruise indefinitely on flat and downhill surfaces with both feet stationed on the board.
A variant of pumping is called gyrating , where you move by slightly turning the board left and right as you go forward. If you're wondering whether to get a skateboard or a longboard, the most important question to ask yourself is "what do you need it for? Even with all the similarities and differences, skateboarding and longboarding are still crucially different when it comes to their purpose.
The length and wheels make skateboards very uncomfortable for longer rides. They are more suitable for skateparks where the surface is hard and flat and you have plenty of space for doing tricks.
You can ride your skateboard in the streets but this is mostly called grinding, where skaters use obstacles in the streets to perform cool stunts.
All in all, they are meant for practicing tricks — ollies, kickflips, darkslides airs, and so on. If that sounds like something you would be into, then a skateboard is the way to go. However, be careful because they are usually less stable and more dangerous to ride, and even forbidden to use on the street in some parts of the world. Longboarding has two main purposes - cruising and transportation. Its design is pure perfection when it comes to street riding.
Its shape, flexible truck and soft wheels make it comfortable and easy to maneuver even on a rougher surface. And, a longboard is amazing even for longer trips. For example, you can easily use one on your commute and have fun on your way to work. But, even with a longboard, you can have a few tricks up your sleeve. Depending on the model, you can try carving, downhill sliding, noseriding and hand-paddling.
