However, this belief is built on an unstable foundation—a foundation designed to distract from the underlying fear that she is actually worthless. She feels threatened by anything that compromises her self-esteem. But her efforts are dedicated to preserving the illusion of superiority rather than addressing the fears and vulnerabilities below the surface.
She may seem confident and well put together, but it is because she truly believes in the exaggerated positive qualities she has ascribed herself—and she feels the strong need for others to also believe in how special she is. Others might observe the following symptoms in someone with narcissistic personality disorder:. The major issue that underlies both disorders is insecurity. As a result, people with borderline personality disorder and those with narcissistic personality disorder both tend to experience patterns of unstable or destructive relationships.
Abandonment is a common theme in both cases. Someone with borderline personality disorder may act out their intense fears of abandonment to such an extent that they drive someone away. They may also struggle to hold a job, due to interpersonal challenges and impulsivity or arrogance.
They face high risks of co-occurring disorders, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar, substance use disorders, eating disorders, and PTSD, among others. As with so many other personality disorders, people with borderline or narcissistic personality disorder are highly unlikely to seek treatment for their distress.
In fact, they believe in their disordered perspective and are unlikely to see that their beliefs are off-base. Ultimately, both disorders require sufficient time and patience to begin to untangle the deeper insecurities and fears. The first step is to get a diagnosis, which can be challenging to pinpoint because so many symptoms of these personality disorders overlap with other disorders.
Indeed, an individual may suffer from multiple behavioral disorders at one time and need a dual diagnosis. Psychotherapy is the primary path to recovery for people with borderline personality disorder and those with narcissistic personality disorder.
And both disorders benefit most from a residential treatment environment , where diverse treatment options are available in one place and recovery can happen in stages over time. With patience and professional guidance, someone with borderline personality disorder or narcissistic personality disorder can gain greater awareness of their actual reality and learn how to respond to relationships and other life stressors in more positive ways. Jentends souvent son rire gnreux He is still there and alive in my mind, I often hear his generous laughter; Pierre Prvert Batches death has always been surrounded by mystery.
One of the main reasons is the reluctance of Denise Tual and other protagonists to discuss it Tuals account of his death was only published in her autobiography in , fty-ve years after the event.
Then there is the stigma and silence related to drug usage, often only referred to obliquely in the press: Les sentiers dangereux des paradis articiels The dangerous paths of articial paradises; Luvre, 17 April Batches death was covered in great detail in the newspapers between 15 and 17 April , and the results of the rst medical ndings were publicly disclosed heart attack resulting from a toxic substance.
The press coverage then suddenly stopped, and the results of the second autopsy were never revealed. Others later raised questions about his death. LHerbier thought it might not be suicide LHerbier , and Le Chanois suggested that he might have committed suicide pour des raisons sentimentales for sentimental reasons; Le Chanois There is no doubt in our minds,.
Another reason why Batches suicide remains shrouded in mystery is a series of bizarre touches. Two weeks before his death, he took Jacques Prvert to the Cimetire du Pre-Lachaise in Paris, where they visited the crematorium, Duhamel reporting that ils staient bien marrs they had a good laugh; Duhamel Batche died at 2am on the morning of 12 April At 10am that same day he had an appointment planned with Lon Poirier to sign the contract for the direction of the lm he had been working on for the previous three months.
Pour ses beaux yeux, the lm that Batche might have directed, began shooting in June, under the charge of the very minor director Robert Bibal, and starring Henri Marchand, who had been mile in Ren Clairs nous la libert It was released under the title Amour. Two days later, the English version of Baroud had its premiere in London, and the French version was released in November.
Amongst the welter of news items and tributes released in the lm press and the general press, we would like to single out the following extract from an interview originally published eighteen months earlier , in which Batche discusses what he was trying to achieve in his screenplays. We nd a peculiar combination of realism and comedy, a perception of the need for everydayness, but also a stepping back, a self-deprecating distance, an irony: Je voudrais que mes personnages disent des phrases comme on en dit dans la vie.
Gurin ; previously in Dor I would like my characters to speak like people do in real life. Have you noticed how, in real life, people are comical all the time without realising it? They say funny things seriously, funny at least for other people. I would like. Pierre Batche and stardom in s French cinema my lms to contain not just irony, but farce, the slapstick that we love in Mack Sennett comedies, with ladders falling on to the hero, platefuls of gravy being overturned, that insidious struggle that objects and animals engage in faced with human incompetence.
Yes, he repeated forcefully, all actors, instead of looking at themselves in the mirror and taking themselves seriously, should learn how to fall without hurting themselves, how to take custard pies, slaps and kicks. What combines the two poles of realism and comedy is a clear valorisation of the popular.
Arguably, this is precisely what the s screenplays of Jacques Prvert, one of Frances greatest popular poets and screenwriters, were to achieve. The peculiar combination of melancholy and popular realism, or poetic realism as it later came to be called, is already there in Batches performance, and in his aims as a screenwriter and director.

There is some doubt in our minds about the accuracy of her account, as she says she met him on the set of a comedy he was making with Colette Darfeuil Tual 86 ; Batche never made a lm with this actress.

Denise Tual arms that Cocteau had already completed his lm Le Sang dun pote , and that he therefore could not have been inuenced by Un Chien andalou, as was subsequently claimed. Pour vous, 48 17 October , p. Dr douard Toulouse , psychiatrist and journalist.
He was one of the most famous French psychiatrists between the wars. He considered mental illness to be a disease, and attempted to treat the mentally ill, if possible, by searching for the cause of their problems. He advocated open and free treatment for them, creating an open psychiatric service in Paris to that eect at the Hpital Henri Rousselle, part of the Hpital Sainte-Anne complex.
He was also Antonin Artauds doctor and close friend around , encouraging his rst literary eorts. The brief account that follows is based on Tual , with some additional elements from Courrire who himself relies very much on Tuals account, augmented by interviews with her and from Prvert and Prvert A short lm, Une Nuit Monte-Carlo , is listed in the French lm archives of the Centre National de la Cinmatographie, and appears to be what is left of Vingt-quatre heures de la vie dune femme.
It is not known if it was released at the time. We believe that Tual confuses this lm with the earlier Le Collier de la reine, which Batche dropped so as to work on Un Chien andalou. It is hardly conceivable that. Pierre Batche and stardom in s French cinema he would have signed up for a lm with Chantal two years after slapping her on set Tual ; this account is not in Tual Tual says Montparnasse, but all contemporary newspaper accounts indicate Montmartre.
Pierre Batche was cremated at the Cimetire du Pre-Lachaise. In , he was transferred to the Cimetire du Montparnasse, together with his mother and sister, after the latters death in In all probability due to steps taken by Denise or Batches family.
It is worth noting that Les Enfants du paradis includes a scene that was originally in the mile-mile screenplay: la pantomime o Baptiste veut se pendre avec une corde sauter denfant the pantomime where Baptiste wants to hang himself with a kids skipping rope; Pierre Prvert The star system in France emerged around as theatre and music-hall stars crossed over into lm Vincendeau 5 , but only really took o in the s with the establishment of a wide-ranging lm press, and the sharp rise in cinema attendance in the mids see Abel The press that interests us here is less the dailies which began to run lm reviews in the early s such as Le Figaro, LHumanit, LIntransigeant, Le Journal, Le Matin, Luvre, Paris-Soir, Le Petit Journal and Le Quotidien , or the up-market literary journals such as LEsprit nouveau, Mercure de France and Les Nouvelles littraires , than the trade and popular lm press on which we have relied signicantly for this book.
Some had been established early on as trade journals, such as Cinjournal , Courrier cinmatographique and Hebdo-Film , Filma , La Cinmatographie franaise and Cinopse , with Filma and Le Film aimed at cinephiles.
There was an explosion of journals around , however. There were cinephile journals, such as Cin pour tous and Cina , these merging into Cina-Cin pour tous in , and Cinmagazine ; but there were new types of journal aimed at a wider public, such as Mon cin Cin-Miroir and Mon lm , followed later in the decade by Pour vous and Cinmonde French actors had to contend, then as they do now, with American or American-based stars in particular.
It is telling, for example, that in the rst year of Louis Dellucs weekly magazine Le Journal du Cin-club, , the majority of its covers and of its star proles focused on non-French stars. In its rst two months, for example, readers would have learnt from a full-page report how the American star Fanny Ward was thinking of settling in France after making lms with Jacques de Baroncelli and Henry Bernstein no. In these rst months, there were only two French actors who made the cover of the magazine.
One was female, Emmy. Lynn, whose career had started in , and who had starred in Abel Gances Mater dolorosa ; see Abel The other was male, year-old Marcel Levesque, whose career started at the same time as Lynns. He would have been familiar to audiences from the series of Louis Feuillade and briey in those of Jean Durand. The jeune premier, or Romantic male lead, emerged very quickly, however.
Charles de Rochefort, for example, is on the August cover of Cin-club no. Jean-Louis Croze complained that the French did not understand how to foreground their stars compared with the Americans, as can be seen from the title of his article: Nous avons nos vedettes.
None the less, by the end of the decade there was a ourishing star culture comprising both French and non-French names. So, for example, Cina-Cin pour tous, like many other journals, ran advertisements for photo-portraits of stars. The list also exemplies the rise of the jeune premier as a key feature of the industry; a survey by Mon cin suggested that young women readers in particular wanted to see more jeunes premiers, rather than men in their forties Desclaux Batche was an important gure in this group of stars; indeed, we shall be arguing that he is key in the transition from the ephebic and melancholy jeune premier to the healthily athletic jeune premier.
He foreshadows the popular heroes of the s, while still looking backwards to both the Romantic hero of the nineteenth century, as well as the exotic New World star most keenly represented by Rudolph Valentino.
Pour vous ran a competition late in the year, just after the premiere of Les Deux Timides, to decide who the top six jeunes premiers were. Figure 2. Eric Barclay whose career began in the UK in the early s and who made lms in both France and Germany in the mids Pour vous b: Two of these, along with Batche, can be found in a Cinmagazine article that year devoted to ideal masculinity.
The article lists principally American and. All of these actors had been born before the end of the nineteenth century. But the article also devotes a section to young adolescent stars, listing Novarro, Batche, the American Charles Buddy Rogers4 and the dancer Ernst van Duren:5 Et voici les phbes au corps mince, au visage encore puril, aux yeux pleins de amme gnreuse.
Alby Here are the young ephebes with their slender bodies and childlike faces, their eyes full of the re of generosity. Ramon Novarro is on the edge. He is more like a man, if it had not been for Ben Hur, where he seems so young.
His silky eyes are those of an adolescent, as is his slender and sturdy body; but the muscled neck, the precise features, are harbingers of maturity. Pierre Batche, whose animated and elated features are still marked with the touching fragility of adolescence, as well as Jaque Catelain, that young god of light.
Charles Rogers cannot prevent his handsome eyes from roving. He may try to hide it, but you can see the naive astonishment and the sincerity of youth in them. More self-assured is van Duren, whom the Germans compare to the famous Apollo Belvedere. The key point to retain from this description is the youthfulness and feminine grace of the jeune premier. This is part of a well-established tradition in French iconography of the nineteenth century, as has been shown by Abigail Solomon-Godeau, who explores the gure of the androgynous ephebe in history painting after the Revolution, pointing out how these gures connote eeminacy, passivity, debility, helplessness and impotence Solomon-Godeau It is worth remembering that the jeune premier gure also had his antecedents in the novels of the nineteenth century, as is suggested by a writer reviewing the gure of the jeune premier in She points out how the jeune premier est la conscration vivante du Prince Charmant, dont rvent les jeunes lles.
He is the living incarnation of the Prince Charming dreamed of by young girls. Up until now only novels could give them a positive idea of this inaccessible and longed-for creature. It isnt surprising that the jeune premier of the cinema became so popular!
A description of him on the set of Monte-Cristo in plays on key Romantic gures, such as Don Juan, Alfred de Musset and Lord Byron, as well as a key gure for the surrealists from later in the century, child-poet Arthur Rimbaud: Des lvres de Don Juan jeune, un rire qui steint vite, une voix capricieuse, par -coups.
Musset dix-huit ans. Frank 89 The lips of a young Don Juan, short laughs, a capricious voice, that comes in ts and starts. Musset at eighteen. And the wilful but also faraway gaze that Byron must have had. Slim as a razor, nervous and quick,.
His hair isnt rued yet, his clothes are not rags, he doesnt have those wide eyes like Rimbaud, but the Romantics would have seen him as a brother. Even as late as , we nd the following description of him on the set of Les Amours de minuit, in terms that recall the melancholic and brooding hero of the Romantic period: Il est immobile dans quelque coin du dcor, tass sur une chaise, lair absent, lil perdu entre les projecteurs teints, on dirait un rveur.
Quand on lui parle, il semble revenir de loin, de trs loin He sits immobile in lost corner, slumped in a chair, his eyes vacant, staring between the darkened projectors, a dreamer. When you speak to him, he seems to return from somewhere far away; Spectateur Given that the jeune premier was, at least in the French case, so anchored in the iconography and the literature of the nineteenth century, we should not be surprised that the gure might well have been seen more as a throwback to the past than to the future.
The future seemed to belong, judging by the mass hysteria they elicited, to more exotic, foreign New World stars such as Novarro and Valentino. The French jeune premier signalled not just the past, however, but a potentially more stable past, where social and physical grace. It is understandable that the French should have desired a return to the Belle poque, seen as a mythical period of stability see Becker and Berstein , ; Vavasseur-Desperriers 53 ; and equally understandable that the image of the impotent youth should reect not just a reaction against the virility of the soldier damaged in the male-dominated and very public theatre of war, but also a wish to return to a more private scene, that of domestic and maternal bliss, as Janine Bouissounouse argued in an article in Cinmonde in Her intentionally ironic sketch, with its almost blasphemous and no doubt unintentional references to the Piet, could not better describe Batches role in Claudine et le poussin at the age of sixteen in Aprs la guerre, pour se dlasser sans doute des soldats.
Denise Tual explains in an interview in that Batche, sans tre homosexuel.
Leurs attitudes, leurs comportements, sans avoir danalogie avec lhomosexualit, plaisaient beaucoup certaines femmes without being homosexual, Batche was a feminine man, something specic to the times. Take Aragon, Dal, luard: all of them were extremely feminine men who had the habit of looking at themselves in the mirror.
Their attitudes, their behaviour, without being specically homosexual, was attractive to some women; Gilles The following description of Batche in Le Bonheur du jour is typical of this view; he is trop joli, cause de cette beaut presque emine too pretty, because of his almost eeminate beauty; Roque It was too static, too perfect, and increasingly out of step with shifting attitudes to masculinity. Mohy encapsulates these points well in her review, articulating the negative views Batche himself had of the roles he played:.
Mohy 6 The jeune premier was the character who was always too well dressed, too well made up, with a too perfect body, whose job it was to kiss his partner on the mouth.
He didnt have to do much else. His role was to be an elegant dummy, the indispensable accessory for a successful lm. Imprisoned in his eternal morning coat or his dinner jacket, the jeune premier was wasting away. But in reality, the jeune premier was considerably more various than this thumbnail sketch allows.
As early as , a sketch of Andr Roanne began bluntly by saying that pour tre un bon jeune premier, il faut tre sportif, lgant et plein dentrain to be a good jeune premier, you have to be sporty, elegant and full of energy; Cin-miroir , hardly the epithets apart from elegance that we might associate with Batche, or the even more eeminate Catelain.
Indeed, Roanne came to prominence in the same lm as Simonne Mareuil who was to star with Batche in Un Chien andalou , Chouchou poids plume Gaston Ravel, , where he plays a boxer. There was clearly a shift towards the more active star; a feature in Mon cin in on sport and cinema began le sport est le roi du jour sport is king; Mon cin 9 , and later that year there was an article entitled Le Public aime les hros sportifs The Public Likes Sporty Heroes; Desclaux Mohys sketch of the gure of the jeune premier, in which she argues that there is an evolution during the s, in reality suggests that these were coexisting variants rather than developmental stages in the gure.
This is because they were all active as stars during the mids. She begins with the eeminate Catelain, but immediately points to the less conventionally beautiful Ivan Mosjoukine and Jean Murat. She considers that a more virile version of the jeune premier was represented by Valentino and Batche, or more proletarian types such as Albert Prjean and Jean Angelo.
These last four correspond to what she calls lhomme sduisant certes, mais fort, protecteur, aussi loign que possible du type cr par un Jaque Catelain par exemple the seducer, yes, but strong, protective, as far away as possible from the type created by a Jaque Catelain, for example; Mohy 7.
The disjunction between Mohys view that Batche is quite unlike Catelain and Albys view that Batche is much the same as Catelain can be at least partly explained by Batches career after Up to and including , Batche was probably seen rather more in the mould of the eeminate Catelain, as can be surmised from the fact that LHerbier used him. Perceptions of Batche changed after Les Deux Timides premiered ve months after Albys article in and Un Chien andalou in , lms he made precisely so as to escape from the typecast jeune premier roles he had previously had.
Seen from the vantage point of the mids, Batche might well have seemed and this is a view we also hold a transitional form of masculinity. Batche in signalled a crossing over from the eeminate Catelain type, with whom he had been associated until , to what became the more dominant jeune premier by the turn of the s, the athletic type. It is undoubtedly no coincidence that the jeunes premiers listed by Mohy who had a signicant career beyond the silent period were those who were the more virile and athletic type.
Murat, Petrovitch, Roanne and even more so Prjean carried on into sound cinema, as did Batche briey,9 while Catelain, the eeminate jeune premier par excellence, did not. Catelain himself was very aware of the shift we have identied, as we can see from the following extract from an article in Ceux qui plaisent actuellement sont les garons francs, nets, sains, avec un bon sourire clair, le cur sur la main.
Those in favour at the moment are honest clean-living lads with a smile on their face, their heart on their sleeve.
People dont like the melancholic or the Romantic. The actor who shares his sorrows or his deepest darkest thoughts with you, is unquestionably boring; Cinmonde, 6 November , quoted in Cadars It is in this respect signicant that the photos of Batche used in the s tended to stress the melancholic type, while Sanniers star portrait of has three pictures of him, the most visible one, cutting across the headline, being of Batche playing tennis Sannier Another star portrait of him the same year articulates the same shift away from the Romantic hero to the more sporty type, reporting that, having just married, Batche and his wife spend their time playing table tennis, the writer commenting on how odd this might seem to those familiar with Batches image: Allez donc vous er, aprs cela, aux regards mlancoliques et la fatale pleur que ce jeune premier ore, sur lcran, ses admiratrices?
Je commence souponner secrtement que, sous lapparence romantique de Batche, se dissimule un personnage factieux Im not sure we can trust the melancholy looks and the sickly pallor of this jeune premier so attractive to his female admirers.
I am beginning to think secretly that under Batches romantic appearance, a more mischievous character is hidden; Dor Batches choice of lms at this juncture in his career is clearly important. In late , his role as Flix Soltiko in Le Perroquet vert, while being linked,. Batche can be considered a transitional jeune premier type for another reason. Unlike Catelain, who suered from the shift away from silent elegance to the sonorous athleticism of sound cinema, Batche had an exotic dimension.
In this optic, Batche was not at all, or at any rate no longer, like the pale and fragile nineteenth-century European melancholic; he was much more like the New World jeune premier so attractive to audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Batche, in other words, had consciously manipulated his image.
The Baroud role can therefore be seen much less as a resigned acceptance of the inevitability of typecasting, and more as a clever shift to the dynamic and exotic jeune premier associated with the New World; it is a conscious reconguration, as Les Deux Timides and Un Chien andalou had been, but for dierent reasons, of the jeune premier role he had played in the mids. Indeed, Batche more generally did everything he could to undermine the image of the jeune premier.
The Sannier interview is extraordinary in this respect, given that he had made his mark as a jeune premier. In this interview, he undermines that role, not just by rejecting it, but by emphasising its stupidity, in terms that recall those of Mohy above: Je ne suis pas un jeune premier.
Sannier I am not a jeune premier. Those who have given me these roles were wrong. Besides, the word comes from an old-fashioned language, which, with its noble mother, its ingnue, its villain, has prevented scriptwriters from.
Pierre Batche and stardom in s French cinema showing us anything other, until now, than two young people who declare their love in the rst part of the lm, who have obstacles put in their path by bad people in the second, but whose lips meet in a close-up in the third.
I dream of lms which would drop these stupid conventions which sterile writers follow claiming that it is to please the public. This is misguided as we can see from the reaction to these conventions at the moment. Its why I think the time has come to make a lm which would be for the French what Laurel and Hardy are for the Americans.
Batches dealings with fan culture also show us how he was the unwilling star we identied in Chapter 1, and which this interview underlines. While there was not the kind of merchandising with which we are now familiar, with stars promoting specic designer clothes or other consumer items, none the less there was a general use of the star as a beacon of elegance, the word that constantly crops up where Batche and some others are concerned. So, for example, Pour vous ran an article in on costume in the cinema, in which publicity photos of Batche were used, with the caption Pierre Batche connat lart de nouer une cravate Pierre Batche knows the art of wearing a tie ; there is a statement in the text pointing to nos sympathiques Jean Murat, Andr Roanne, Pierre Batche llgance dgage, jeune et de bon got our likeable Jean Murat, Andr Roanne, Pierre Batche with their casual, youthful and tasteful elegance; dAhetze 7.
Along with other stars, Batches views were sought for spurious and supercial surveys, such as the one, occasioned by Gentlemen Prefer Blondes Malcolm St Clair, , on whether blondes were preferable to brunettes.
Unlike the other respondents for this instalment of the survey jeune premier Eric Barclay and lmmakers Alberto Cavalcanti, Donatien and Jacques Feyder , whose responses are serious, Batche responds humorously, saying that one cannot tell the dierence most of the time because of the way cameramen use the lighting, and that in any case he prefers wigs Lenoir a: Batches dismissiveness extends to his own lms. A star portrait tells us that he hates his own lms, and that his screen character lui reste indirent, et il le voit vivre et sagiter, sans lui porter autrement dintrt remains indierent to him, and he watches him live and bustle about without having the slightest interest in him; Lenoir b: A few months later, fans were reminded: Je ne vais jamais au cinma, surtout quand on donne un lm dont je suis I never go to the cinema, especially when its one of my.
Similarly, one of the more interesting features of Batches intersection with fan culture is his attitude to fan mail. In the same interview with Jean Kolb to which we have just referred, Batche apologises for not answering fan mail, saying that he rigorously classies all the letters sent to him but that he is too busy to respond, and promising that he will employ a secretary to deal with his correspondence.
As we can see, the data conrm his sudden leap to stardom in ; but they also show a declining number of references thereafter, when we might have expected them to increase. Not only that, but the tenor of the interventions changes over time.
In the references from , the issue of mail is hardly mentioned. But from summer , the references are frequently complaints that he is not answering mail, such as this example from 20 July: Je ne sais pas si Pierre Batche rpond, car plusieurs lectrices se plaignent de son silence I dont know whether Pierre Batche answers, as several women readers have complained about not hearing from him , with many more complaints of this kind in , such as this rather damning advice from 31 May: Inutile dcrire Pierre Batche, il ne veut pas rpondre, ce serait un timbre gch Pointless writing to Pierre Batche, he doesnt want to answer, its a waste of a stamp.
Indeed, there was even an editorial piece in the magazine by Jean Vignaud that year focusing on stars who did not respond and singling Batche out, with Vignaud quoting a presumably ctional reader, Mademoiselle Myosotis Miss Forget-me-not : Voulez-vous me dire si Pierre Batche rpond ordinairement aux lettres quon lui adresse?
I would like you to box his ears for me, because he hasnt answered the letter I sent him a month ago; Vignaud By , however, there are no longer any complaints of this kind, and the indications are that he appears to have started responding again: Oui, Pierre Batche et Nils Asther rpondent aux lettres Yes, Pierre Batche and Nils Asther are answering letters; 27 March.
We can only surmise that this may well have had something to do with nervousness in the transition to sound cinema, and the need to maintain a fan base so that he could subsidise his scriptwriting with an active career as a lm star, no matter how distasteful the idea of the typecast jeune premier might have been for him.
